Zornia latifolia is an perennial herb belonging to the Leguminosae family. Often grown as a tropical pasture legume. Zornia diphylla is a synonym of Z. latifolia.
Zornia latifolia is native to South America: Argentina (north of latitude 35°S), Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, French Guiana, Guyana, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Uruguay and Venezuela. Its preferred habitat is open fields and grassy areas.
The dried leaves and seeds are smoked in Brazil as a substitute for cannabis (Plants of the Gods, Schultes and Hofmann, 1992). Recent bioassays have confirmed this to be a true report, smoking a small amount of leaf and seed is remarkably Cannabis-like.
Care and cultivation Sow seed in spring or summer. Rich soil, full sun. Zornia accepts a wide range of growing conditions. Prefers warmer conditions and will mostly die back in colder conditions, except in tropical environments. Hence, treat like an annual in colder areas, unless you can keep them warm over the cold period.
